What's the difference between "stare up" and just "stare"?

"Stare up" is a phrasal verb of "stare". To "stare up" refers to staring in an upward direction. While "stare up" still means to stare at something, it is more similar to "look up" than just plainly staring. Ex: He stared up at the sky and saw a shooting star. Ex: They stared at the teacher in confusion.
