Can I say "onto" instead of "into"?

No, "onto" can not be said instead of "into" here. He says "into" because "into" describes going "inside" of an inclosed space, which is his "home". "Onto" describes going on top of something, therefore, because the inside of the home is being referred to rather than the top of the home, "into" should be used.
