"Mega" means that something is huge, large, or gigantic. It also can mean "extremely." When the reporter says "mega storms" he is saying that the storms are very large. To answer your second question, yes! This can be used in other scenarios as well. Ex: New York City is a mega city! Ex: His family is mega rich.
