Native speaker’s answer

Rebecca

Licorice is a type of herb commonly grown in Europe and Asia. It's used in medicine but is also well-known as a type of hard candy which is black in color. It's one of those types of candies that garners a lot of love/hate reactions, and many people don't like to eat it as it has a distinct, strong taste. That explains the surprise of the speaker in the video here, as licorice is not even popular as a candy flavor, much less as a topping for pizza.
