Why did he say "I'd try", not "I tried"?
Native speaker’s answer
Rebecca
He said "I'd try" instead of "I tried" because he is saying what he was thinking earlier, as if he is quoting his thoughts. You can think of this phrase as: I thought to myself, "I'd like to try one". Saying "I thought I tried one" does not work for this sentence because it would sound like the speaker is questioning whether they "tried one" or not.
