Can I say "garden" instead of "yard"?

Gardens are different from yards. Front yards and backyards are simply areas (paved or grassed) that surround a house, whereas a garden is a piece of land used to grow vegetables, flowers, or other plants. Thus, a yard can have a garden in it, but a garden cannot be a yard. These are not interchangeable terms. Ex: I have a small garden in my backyard. Ex: My dogs like to play in our yard as there's a lot of room to run around.
