Good question. In the United States of America after being arrested, if the allegation is on the more serious side, then the person arrested will appear in court before a judge, this is "bond court". At this point in the system, there is no jury and this is technically not a trial. It is simply where the person is informed of the charges against them and the judge makes a choice. The judge can release the person "on his own recognizance", meaning they give a written promise that they will show up for future court appearances and not engage in illegal activity. Or the judge can set a cash or bond amount (bond is a promise from a 3rd party to pay the amount if the person fails to attend their court date). The final option is that the judge can send them back to jail until the next court date if they believe the person will not return to court if they are released.
