I don't understand this sentence well enough. How the winner can be unsuccessful? Does it mean the winner die?

Native speaker’s answer

Most likely, the speaker means that if the winner dies or for some other reason cannot participate after already winning the competition, they will be considered unsuccessful. In such a case, the runner-up (second place winner) will take the first place winner's place.
