If there is only two options to choose, shouldn't he say "it's the less" not "it's a less"?

The indefinite article "a" is used here instead of the definite article "the", because the noun "version" is used generally, as though there can be multiple versions. You could use "the" in this case, however, it would indicate that the noun is specific and that there is only one other "version" of the second statement in this case.
