The phrase "for the greater good" is quite a common expression which refers to the fact that you are doing something that most likely will not benefit you but will benefit many people, a community or even the human race. The expression is often used in political, religious, moral or ethical contexts, however here it is being used humourously which is another common use. Ex: I think it's for the greater good if we call the whole thing off. Ex: He did it for the greater good. That is just really heartwarming.
