In this context "drop out" means to not do something that you were going to do, or to stop doing something before you have completely finished it. However, it is often commonly used to say that a person has chosen to not finish school. So, be very careful with context when you use the phrase. Ex: He dropped out after only 2 terms. Ex: I'm a college drop out. Ex: After 4 laps I had to drop out of the race because my ankle was swollen. Ex: Some investors are rumored to have dropped out because of the growing cost of running the business.
