"-Ness" is a suffix sometimes added at the end of words to indicate a state, quality, or degree of something. It is added to adjectives to form nouns. For example, if we want to describe the state or quality of being dark (an adjective), "darkness" (a noun) is used, like in this video here. Ex: The sky has varying degrees of darkness. (The sky has varying degrees of being dark, i.e. darkness) Ex: All everyone wants is to achieve happiness. (The state of being happy) Ex: The sadness was obvious on her face. (The state of being sad)
