Why is the preposition "from"? I don't get the meaning quite well.

The preposition "from" is used here because "company" is something that you "give" to someone (although it is referred to as "keeping someone company"). "Company" in this context refers to spending time with someone so they are not lonely. Ex: I live alone, but my dog keeps me company. Ex: Will you come over and keep me company?
