Folk tales (or folktales) are oral stories that are passed down generation by generation within a community. Folk tales can include things like fables and fairytales, but not necessarily the other way around! Fairytales in particular are stories about magic, usually involving characters such as witches, wizards, magical creatures, and so on. Many historians believe that fairytales first emerged in the 1800s, when European writers took popular folktales and wrote them in a way to appeal to the aristocratic class. Thus, you can imagine that folk tales are the basis for many popular fairytales that exist today.
