Native speaker’s answer

"China," particularly in the past, was used to refer to porcelain. A "china doll" is a painted doll made out of glazed porcelain. They are painted, have hair, and often wear intricate dresses and clothing for decoration. These dolls were commonly given as toys to little girls. Now, "china" isn't used as commonly as "porcelain" is. Ex: Helen Keller received a china doll as a present. Ex: My grandmother has a huge antique porcelain doll collection.
