Why does it use future tense with the expression "the last time"? Is it common to use future tense like this?

Great question. The grammar here is actually perfectly fine. This is because "will" is not being used as a future tense. "Will" is being used here as a modal verb. So in the sentence, "will" is used to show intent/possibility rather than tense. Ex: Put your money away. I told you I'll pay. Ex: She said that she'll be able to help.
