Is it okay not to put "a" when saying "He's friend of ~"?

The script here was incorrect, it should have said "He was friends with Johnny's dad" instead of "He's friend of Johny's dad". The script has been corrected. When using "friend of", the article "a" should always go in front of "friend". For example, "She is a friend of mine."
