I think in order to understand "but to" it's important to remember that "but" is usually used to introduce an added statement. It is used in this way with the term "no choice" and then "but to" when there is only one thing you can do in a particular situation. Ex: We had no choice but to go back home. Ex: He had no choice but to tell his boss. Ex: They left me no choice but to give them detention.
