"Biosignature" is a scientific term, sometimes called chemical fossil or molecular fossil. It is any substance (like an element, isotope, or molecule) or phenomenon that provides scientific evidence of past or present life. Ex: Oxygen is often considered by scientists to be the most important biosignature gas on Earth. Ex: Biosignatures are all around us. Even the distinct smell of trees in a forest can be considered a biosignature.
