"Gratify" means to please someone, or to satisfy a wish or need. In other words, it is giving pleasure by doing something, either for yourself or for others. Usually, if you are doing something to please yourself, is called "self-gratification". As verbs, the difference between "gratify" and "appreciate" is that "gratify" means to please, usually others. While "appreciate" is to be grateful or thankful for someone or something. Ex: He was gratified to see how well his students had done. (He was pleased) Ex: The students appreciated all the help their teacher gave them. (They were thankful)
