Is there a difference in the degree of joy between "glad" and "happy"?

Yes, "happy" is generally a little bit stronger than "glad". The word "happy" is also mostly used to indicate something which brings someone personal joy, while "glad" is often used to indicate something which affects more than yourself. Ex: I got admitted to the university. I am so happy! Ex: I'm so glad the weather is nice today.
