Great question. To "move away from (something)" literally means to move to be less close to something. Often this action is done out of caution, because the thing is dangerous in some way. Ex: Everyone, please move away from the exit so others can come out safely. However it is also used to mean that someone changes their ideas, beliefs, or, in this case habits. Ex: As I get older I am moving away from the more careless attitudes of my youth.
