"Mad" is not necessarily informal, it just depends on the context in which you use it. In this context, it is appropriate to use, however if you wanted the sentence to sound a bit more formal, you could replace "mad" with "angry", "upset", "irritated", or "displeased". There are many other synonyms for "mad", however most express a much more extreme meaning of anger. Ex: I'm irritated with him because he lied to me. Ex: She's upset with her roommate for making a mess.
