When something is "affected" by something else, it means that it changes because of this thing. Other words you can use are "changed", "influenced", "altered", or "determined". To "change" means that something is made different. This is the most basic word to express the meaning of something being made different, and is less formal than "affect." Ex: They were affected by the earthquake. Ex: Her story changed me. To be "influenced" means that one thing has an effect or causes something else to behave or do something. It doesn't necessarily mean that something has been "changed", it just means that something else takes on the characteristics of something else. Ex: This movie was influenced by a true story. "Altered" means to make small adjustments or changes to something which makes it eventually have a big change. Ex: These clothes are too big; they need to be altered. "Determined" is a more technical or scientific way to say that the change of one thing requires something else. This word is most similar to "affected" and "influenced". Ex: Plant growth is determined by sunlight and water.
