When can I skip the preposition "on" after "depend"?

Most of the time, "on" follows the word "depend." This is because it is a phrasal verb. Even when I listen to this video, the sentence sounds odd without the preposition "on." The only time that I can think of using just "depends" without "on" afterward is when you end the sentence with "depends." Here are examples of "depends" without using "on." Ex: A: Can I go tonight? B: Well that depends. Did you finish your homework? Here are examples of "depends on." Ex: I depend on him. Ex: It depends on the situation. Ex: Her salary depends on the number of hours she has worked.
