I do understand that crescent refers to the shape of the moon however, does it somewhat related to the musical term "crescendo"?

I don't believe so. As you may already know, "crescendo" is the loudest point that is reached gradually. A "crescent" moon is the light reflecting on a small portion of the moon. They originally had the same Latin root, but time has changed the meaning. "Crescent" and "crescendo" used to mean "the final stage of something."
