Native speaker’s answer

It's more common to write "LDR" than it is to say "LDR." Most will say "long-distance relationship" when speaking about it or just "long-distance" to abbreviate it. To a native speaker, saying LDR sounds odd, even if we know what it means. She may have used "LDR" so she doesn't have to continue saying "long-distance relationship" over and over again.
