This is often in regards to something bad, however, to "brace oneself" can also be used when referring to someone preparing themselves for something good. To physically "brace oneself" refers to pressing oneself against something for support and steadiness. Ex: Brace yourself for the bad news. Ex: I braced myself for the drop on the roller coaster by holding on to the rail.
