Aerogels are among the lightest solid materials known to man. Aerogel is a synthetic ultralight material made from a gel, with the liquid usually in a gel replaced with a gas. They are solid to the touch. Aerogels are used for a variety of applications but most of these are still very technical scientific applications. However, NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland has invented groundbreaking methods of creating new types of aerogels that could change the way we use insulation to keep in heat.
