A "knee-jerk reaction" is a quick response that happens out of habit and without much consideration. It originates from the kneecap (patella) reaction, which is when one's leg will kick out in an automatic response if the kneecap is struck. The patella reaction is a physical conditional reflex, whereas, in this video, the speaker is referring to a psychological conditional reflex (reacting without thinking). An expression similar to "knee-jerk reaction" is "gut reaction." Ex: When Lisa confronted her sister about her lies, her knee-jerk reaction was to deny everything. Ex: The knee-jerk reaction of the mayor to the pandemic was to shut down the city. Ex: Her gut reaction was to run away.
