Is "asking" in the end of the sentence really necessary?

"Asking" here is not the end of the sentence, as indicated but the colon. "Asking" is then followed by what was asked "we've got an unexpected baby boy. Do you want him?" This is the end of the sentence. Do not confuse the long pause he takes as an end, here it could be for dramatic pause, to take a breath or simply because he is a little nervous. Ex: I'm asking you if you want more? Ex: He called me asking if I wanted to go to dinner.
