Why did the speaker use present progressive form here?

teacher

Native speaker’s answer

Rebecca

The speaker used the present progressive tense because the fruit being eaten is an action that will happen in the immediate future. The present progressive tense indicates an action that is currently happening or an action that will happen very soon. As you may already know, the structure of the present progressive tense is the subject, the helping verbs is/am/are, and the action verb with an -ing added to the end of it. In this sentence, "you" is the subject, the helping verb is "are," and the action verb is "eating." Ex: We are eating at a steakhouse tonight. Ex: She is going to see a friend later. Ex: I am walking to the park.
