The main difference between a "star" and a "planet" is that a "star" has its own light, whereas a "planet" does not. A "star" omits light and shines. They're also made out of different matter. Ex: From earth, you know the bright dot is a star if it twinkles. If it doesn't twinkle, then it's a planet! Ex: The sun is a star.
