In English, it is considered rude for children to call adults in positions of authority by their first names. Since a teacher is a person if authority it is very common for children to call teachers either "Miss (last name)" or "Mr (last name)", depending on the gender of the teacher. "Miss" is used exclusively for women and "Mr" for men. It is also common to shorten these even further and simply call the teacher "Miss" or "Sir", again "Miss" is exclusively for women and "Sir" is exclusively for men. Ex: Mr. Jones, I don't understand the homework. = Sir, I don't understand the homework. Ex: Thanks for your help Miss Brown. = Thanks for your help Miss.
