Is "salvage" and "savage" similar words?

I can see why you think they'd be similar, but they're very different! "Salvage" means to save something. "Savage" means fierce, violent, or vicious. Ex: We need to salvage as much of the cake as possible and make it look nice for Jen's birthday. Ex: The dog next door is really savage. It scared my cat last week.
