What's the main difference between "in spite" and "despite?" I know they have similar meanings, but do they have different usage?

Good question! "In spite of" and "despite" mean the same thing and can be used interchangeably. The only real difference is that "despite" is a bit shorter and slightly more casual in tone. Ex: We went hiking despite the rain. Ex: We went hiking in spite of the rain.
