The main difference between a "franchise" and a "chain" is who owns it. A "franchise" store is owned by an individual, a separate investor. Whereas a "chain" is owned by a corporation on behalf of shareholders. Ex: They had to close the franchise because the owner was running things differently from the brand. Ex: They've opened multiple chains and plan on opening more.
