If something "takes a twist," it means that there's a change in the way something happens or unfolds. "Twist" is used commonly in response to stories and movies- or in telling stories. It's sometimes used as the phrase "take a twist." Ex: What a twist at the end of the movie! I didn't think the superhero would actually be the villain. Ex: Our week took a twist when we found out that we got free tickets for vacation. We packed our bags quickly and left.
