student asking question

I'd heard the word "loan shark" in American media. Since there's a word "loan," I do understand its concept, but why would there be a word "shark?"

Ah, so a "loan shark" is someone who gives out loans at a high cost and usually illegally! They're called loan "sharks" because they can be aggressive and greedy and will do illegal things to make sure they get their repayment. They're kind of scary, like sharks. Ex: My neighbor used to be a loan shark, but I'd never go to him for money. Ex: The police caught a loanshark the other day.
