Would it sound awkward if I say "demand" instead of "need" in this context? If so, what's the main difference between these words?

Demand is very much stronger in meaning, and not necessarily the best word for this situation. To "need" something means to have a lack of something that must be filled, but to "demand" means to strongly request or command for something. Thus, it doesn't quite work here. Ex: I need to buy some groceries today. Ex: The protestors demanded that the CEO resign from the company.
