There is a slight difference! When you refer to someone as a "friend of mine" it implies that you know them, but it's less specific, and you may not be that close to them, or you know them from a certain time! Whereas "my friend" implies a closer personal connection. Ex: A friend of mine from school works there! Ex: You can let him in James, he's a friend of mine. Ex: I'm going out with my friend Tim later for dinner! Ex: My friend Kerry wants to know if you like playing games?
