Would it sound awkward if I exchange the word "believe" and "expectation", and say "he expected that this time his beliefs would align with reality" instead?

It would sound a little awkward, yes! The context would change quite a lot. If one expects their beliefs to align with reality, it would be more about their belief system rather than one's actions. Ex: I expected to believe him when he told me what happened, but I didn't. Ex: Through the years, I noticed that my beliefs were changing. I didn't expect that to happen. Ex: He expected the evening to go smoothly, but it didn't.
