What's the main difference between "annoying" and "irritating?" Or are they interchangeable?

They mean pretty much the same thing, but "irritating" is a bit more formal in tone. You can use both words in this context! Ex: Having to fill out countless forms can be irritating. Ex: It's annoying when I get bitten by mosquitoes.
