I wouldn't say it's common to use every day, but it is common in some contexts or situations! It's a good introductory phrase to describe one's role, task, or purpose for something. So it can be used in formal settings too! Ex: So, I'm here to organize all the books on the library shelves. Otherwise, no one else will. Ex: Jenny is here to tell us about her new book. = Hi! I'm Jenny. I'm here to tell you about my new book.
