A "cult" is a social group (usually revolving around a religion) that strictly follows a set of beliefs or rituals seen as unorthodox or unusual. Cults have an extremely negative connotation as followers have extreme beliefs, and cult leaders use religion as an excuse to abuse, indoctrinate, or brainwash their followers. They also often do not follow common social norms and engage in illegal acts like polygamy. In this context, however, I think "cult" is being used in a very loose sense. It is likely the "Cult of the Dead Cow" was simply a name and not a real religious cult. Ex: Many cult followers suffer from abuse and exploitation. Ex: There are many infamous cults in history, including the one lead by Charles Manson.
