What's "grown-ups" mean? Does hyphen(-) have to be there in the middle?

"Grown-up" is a compound noun which means adult. The plural form is "grown-ups!" It can also function as an adjective. The hyphen is there to indicate that it functions as one word. Without it, it could be confusing if you read "grown" and "up" as separately, and it could be confused with the phrasal verb "grow up," which means to mature. Ex: All the grown-ups at the party were boring. Ex: I have three grown-up children.
