Do you call an execution an "execute," because the executioner is executing the death penalty?

I guess so! All of these words have slightly different functions! "Execution" is the noun form for carrying out a death sentence. "Executing" is a verb in the present continuous tense and, in the sentence you have written, means to follow through with something, and "execute," the base verb form, means to carry out the death sentence. Ex: People are not executed anymore. In the old days people used to watch executions. Ex: Executioners were trained to execute people.
