"I beg your pardon" is quite a versatile phrase, depending on the context and one's tone of voice. It can be used to politely apologize when you've done something impolite or when you've made a mistake. But when said angrily, it means "what did you just say?" as if taken aback and angered by what the person said. Lastly, it's also a polite way to ask someone to move out of the way. Ex: Beg your pardon, coming through. => walking through a crowd Ex: I beg your pardon. I didn't mean to interrupt your meeting. Ex: I shouldn't have said that. I beg your pardon. Ex: I beg your pardon?! How dare you insult me. => angry tone
