What would be the main difference between "environment" and "surroundings"?

There is a slight difference between the two. "Surroundings" is most often used to describe physical surroundings (related to the verbs "to surround/to be surrounded"). Ex: Are there any trees in your surroundings? Ex: I'm surrounded by people here. Meanwhile, "environment" can mean the above but also holds an additional definition, which concerns the surroundings and conditions (which can be non-physical!) that one is in. Thus, "environment" is used more commonly in reference to one's workplace as it can include both physical and non-physical factors. Ex: My work environment is great because my coworkers are very friendly. => non-physical condition Ex: I want to look for a job with a better working environment because my company doesn't treat its employees well. =>non-physical condition
