I've heard about "rip off" but not sure about "rip up". Does it used as commonly as "rip off"?

No, it has a different meaning to "rip off", but I see where you're coming from. Here the use of "rip" means to tear apart or destroy. The character lifted off the roof of the house, so it was destroyed. Ex: My dog ripped up the carpet this morning. Ex: I ripped up my contract as soon as I finished working there.
